Overland Park Metro Dentists Use Sedation to Take the Bite Out of Dental Fear

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Lots of people wish they could sleep through their dental appointment, rather than endure potential discomfort or the sound of the dentist’s drill.

Sedation dentistry is working to take the bite out of dental fear.

“Fear of pain keeps a number of people from visiting the dentist regularly,’” said Overland Park cosmetic dentist Dr. Alberto Castaneda. “Sedation dentistry helps alleviate that fear.”

Sedation dentistry has become a welcome option for patients who have endured prior bad experiences, uncomfortable procedures or who simply fear the dentist.

There are several types of sedation dentistry offered at Castaneda’s Overland Park dental office.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation allows the dental patient to undergo procedures while being in a state of reduced awareness.

“We prescribe patients a sedative pill, which they take about an hour before their procedure,” said Castaneda, a Overland Park implant dentistry provider. “By the time they arrive for their appointment, the pill has helped relax the patient.”

IV Sedation

IV sedation is similar to oral sedation, except that the anti-anxiety sedatives are administered intravenously. IV sedatives take effect much more rapidly than oral sedatives. Once they take effect, Castaneda can administer the local anesthesia and begin the procedure.

Nitrous Oxide

Also referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is another form of anesthetic commonly used in Castaneda’s dental practice. It is administered through a small mask the patient wears over their nose. The patient breathes in through the nose and out through the mouth to get the benefits of the gas, which typically set in within 30 seconds to four minutes.

Sedation Dentistry Benefits

Sedation dentistry has been a welcome option to fearful patients because it can be used for a variety of procedures, including crowns, fillings, dental implants and veneers. Fearful patients often will know that they need these procedures done, but anxiety prevents them from scheduling the appointment. The longer the condition goes untreated, the more likely it is to worsen and require more in-depth treatment.

For example, a patient may have a simple cavity that needs to be filled. But because of fear, the patient doesn’t schedule the appointment to get a filling. If enough time passes, the tooth becomes more painful and what once could have been repaired with a filling now requires a dental crown or perhaps a root canal.

“It’s a downward spiral,” overland park cosmetic dentist said. “They don’t seek treatment because they fear a painful procedure, yet the longer they wait, the more invasive and potentially uncomfortable procedure is required to correct the problem.”

Should You Get Fitness Machines For Your Home?

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Whenever I get back home from college during those long summer months, I lose access to their gym. For me, exercising is very important, and not being able to do my cardio or workout easily really distracts me from my healthy life style. So recently, I gave some thought to having a gym at home; the same convenience as having a gym at school, but even better. I did my research and found it isn’t as simple as buying some equipment and placing it all at home.

There are many different factors to consider before you even think about buying a particular piece of equipment. You really need to consider all the different factors including what type of exercises you want to do, how much room do you have. Imagine buying over $10,000 worth of equipment (an impossible dream for a student like me), only to find out you can’t even fit it into the room. So the very first thing you should look at is how much room you have in your house.

Once you’ve got that, you need to figure out how much money you’re willing to sink into it. I think it’s always to buy equipment after you get into the habit of working out; other wise you risk just wasting your money while the machine sits in the room. For that, best stick with your local gym as you’d probably save money (at least until you’re used to working out). Once you do have the habit, buying equipment should be less of a guilt. Figure out how much you’re willing to spend, but remember to not buy equipment that are subpar; it would be better to buy better quality equipment overall. Figure out how much money you can and wiling to spend and stick with the budget.

It’s not just the actual exercise equipment that you have to check out. Remember all the other things that needs go into an exercise room: mirrors, rubber paddings, ground mats. All of these factors have to be calculated also in your budget. No matter what the costs may be, purchasing fitness equipment is a worthwhile investment for your medical health in the long run.

After you’ve done your research and budgeting, it’s finally time to go out and buy it. Generally there are two routes you can take: used equipment or new equipment. Each has its disadvantages and advantages: used equipment is cheaper, and you have the potential to buy quality, well taken care of equipment for a very good price. On the other hand, you might not have warranty/support from the company, plus the equipment might only look like it’s in a good shape.

New equipment has the advantage of being unused, guaranteed to be clean (although if you worked out at a gym, this shouldn’t really be an issue), and proper support from the manufacturers. Only problem is the price. If you do choose used, always make sure to inspect the equipment properly before making a decision to buy.

Buying equipment for your gym can be an exciting and worthwhile endeavour. make sure you do everything you can so it’d be as smooth as possible.

The Procedures For Losing Weight

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Why do diets fail? Remember this, and remember this well: your mind and body are one. In other words, once your body figures out that there’s less food going around, your body will start to slow it’s metabolism down and hold on to as many calories as it can. Your mind on the other hand, realizes this and starts gearing to finding more food. You will think about food all day long and eventually you might even give in and binge. Then you’d feel terrible.

Besides, food should be consumed at regular intervals. While there are diets that are nutritious, they are only effective if you follow professional advice. For most people, going on a diet generally leads to failed results and disappointment.

Struggling with a weight problem is never easy. It is definitely frustrating that after trying so many diets, as well as exercising constantly, to find out you did not keep the weight off. One possible alternative is weight loss surgery.

Weight loss surgery is a great way to lose weight. Not only does it tackle the heart of the problem of the weight gain problem, but it also provides a permanent solution to the weight loss problem. Unfortunately, it may not be something that is covered by health insurance or your government health plan. This means you have to cover the costs upfront.

Lapband surgery is actually cheaper in the long run than other types of weight loss surgery, if only because it requires less support and monitoring than the other drastic forms of surgery. There are less complications, less risk, and it’s a simple surgery. And after the surgery your quality of life would improve dramatically. To lose weight, you’ll find yourself being able to breath easier, walk a little further, and even talk better, with the increase in self-esteem. You’ll find yourself looking better, healthier. And your every day life activities would just be so much better.

You must remember one thing, and that is you are investing in yourself. Many surgery places actually offer payment plans and financing plans for your surgery, similar to leaning or buying a car, or even to a mortgage. You simply need to make a down payment, and a monthly payment every month. Depending on your credit rating, your monthly payment can be reduced. Plus, whenever you have extra money lying around, you could always make extra payments.

Try to look around and check out different weight loss surgery clinics for the best deal. Some offer better rates than others, for example, a lower monthly payment plan for a longer period time.

Just remember that this is an investment in yourself – in having a higher quality of life for the rest of your life. It is not a one time cost where the benefits last short term. If you think of it as an investment, then financing it won’t seem as far fetched. Clinics offer very reasonable financing plans, and are sure to have something that will fit your needs.

Top 5 Reasons to Go to a Spa

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Some of you may ask, why should you go to a spa for some fun and relaxation? There are many other places and things to do, and many of it actually cost less. For one thing, you will be missing out on all the advantages, from health, social, to even just the spa experience itself. If you’ve never tried the spa experience before, you should really check it out yourself to understand what it is all about. Below are Top 5 reasons why you should go to the spa.

1. If you’re looking to stay fit and live healthy, a health spa may just be for you. Health spas are specially designed to provide you with the information and help needed to live a healthy live style. They offer nutritious foods, great exercises, and of course, a nice relaxing spa treatment.

2. Relaxing at a spa is probably an obvious reason to go there, but you can take it even further by going to a resort spa. You can bring the husband and kids along; resort spas have amenities for your whole family! Golfing, and other entertainment options are there, and best of all, the spa treatment there is almost to be sure to be better.

3. Losing weight at a spa may seem weird, but there are weight lost spas around. Long gone are the days where you’re forced to count your calories. Weight loss spas now focus on teaching their clients to eat healthy, and live healthy in the long term.

4. Living in a polluted urban area isn’t very good for your health, and spas offer a great way to detoxify yourself. There are spas that specialize in this area, and you can even get ‘localized’ versions of detox treatments.

5. Some spas even offer hiking as part of their package! You get to hike over gorgeous landscapes, get some exercise, and best of all, end with some relaxing and energizing spa treatment.

In terms of services, although spas and salons may vary in terms of the more higher end services, they all have the same standard services. In a full service spa , you should expect these services: facials, hand and foot care, waxing, eye care, massages, body wraps, spa packages, men’s spa services, makeup applications, reflexology, and permanent makeup services. A full service salon should offer cutting and style for both women and men (women is generally more expensive, in some cases more than double the men’s price), shampoo and blow-dry, and services for children. They should also offer colouring services, including retouching, full head, and high lights. Perm is also another standard service.

Another thing to consider is the sort of products they use. Their salon products should be from the top brands, and from the professional lines of products. Such brands includes ’Oreal Professional, Redken, Paul Mitchell, AG, Graam Webb, and Sebastian. For foot and hand care (pedicure and manicure), their products should be from a world leader and of highest quality; OPI is a well known brand in the pedicure industry, and Gehwol is known to specialize in foot care products. These brands have a reputation for providing the best experience possible, and it’s always best to stick with what’s well known, especially for you first experience.
