How to Improve Your Health

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Why is maintaining our health so important? For starters, scientific studies have shown that those who lead a healthy life are more likely to live longer. As if the longer life span isn’t a strong enough incentive, there are consequences for not adhering to the healthy lifestyle. Sicknesses, diseases, and even body pains are the very common symptoms, and they also signify that you haven’t kept your body in tune.

Often times we neglect our health, especially in today’s fast paced work world. We work day in and day out, but we never realize that we are forgetting the number one important thing in our life: our health. We never explicitly tie health to our own happiness, but our health plays a large part in it.

If you want to improve your health, there are several ways to do so. First is active exercise. It could either be jogging, swimming, sports, or even yoga and dance. As long as your body is moving, it is working! Not only does exercise help tone your muscles, but it also allows your internal system to function properly.

Having a consistent workout routine ensures that your body is fit and in shape. Working out is important because a strong body develops a strong immune system. Think of it as building a human shield against viruses and illnesses. Working out is a sure-fire way to enhance your healthy lifestyle.

Second is to eat a balanced and nutritious diet. That includes all the different food groups, as well as regular intakes. Remember to always eat a meal in the morning, so your body can work properly for the rest of the day!

Eating a balanced meal is important to leading a healthy lifestyle. A balanced meal consists of not only eating among the different food groups, but also the right amounts at regular time intervals. It is crucial to eat at least three meals per day, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Food keeps your brain energized and your bodily functions operable.

Third is to change your daily habits, such as sleeping early and rising early. You may not think these little habits of yours make a difference in the long run, but they are important!

For example, our body needs a certain amount of sleep in order to feel energized on the next day. Experts recommend approximately seven to eight hours of sleep per day. Having a comfortable sleeping environment is also important for building up rest. It might be advisable to look into purchasing the right pillows and beds to ensure the most suitable rest possible.

Also, your psychological make-up is important to supplementing your emotional health lifestyle. Having a strong circle of friends and family will definitely be beneficial during times of stress, pressure, and crisis. Since stress takes a tow on your physical body, don’t put too much unnecessary pressure on yourself.

The best way to improve your health is through a well-developed combination of the above factors. As long as you eat healthily, exercise regularly, and live brightly…you are on your way to a long and prosperous life!

Is Weight Loss Surgery Too Expensive?

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Perhaps one of the biggest issues around nowadays is weight loss. With obesity now being one of the biggest epidemics in North America, losing weight is not only about looking good, it’s also about staying healthy. We’ve all heard or watched the documentary Super Size Me, and heard of all the terms like BMI, pounds, diabetes, and more. But did you know that losing weight will also significantly improve your quality of life? But then you find out the bad news: it’s too expensive! You can’t afford it.

Out of all the different weight loss surgeries out there, without a doubt the safest and the one with the most advantages would be the adjustable gastric band. This is also known as the lapband. When you compare it with the other weight lost surgeries, it’s safe, effective, and minimally invasive. With this in mind, what exactly are the benefits of choosing lapband surgery over the other options?

First off, the lapband surgery is a proven procedure. Not only has it been performed worldwide, with over 400,000 surgeries performed, but numerous of clinic studies on its safety and efficacy has proven this.

Second, the band is designed to be adjustable. So you don’t need to have surgery again in order to adjust it; you can easily adjust the degree you want in your weight loss, depending on your circumstances. For example, if you get pregnant, it is quite simple to loosen the band until you are ready to start your weight loss again.

Third, this procedure is quite affordable. Depending on the clinic that you go to, there are a wide variety of financing programs. They may have an in-house financing program that is designed to keep the procedure as affordable as possible. With monthly payments less than a car, and a decent down payment, as long as you keep in mind that you are investing in your own long term health, financing the procedure is easy.

One major advantage over other surgeries with the lapband is it is completely reversible. If for some reason, you want to remove it, it is just another simple procedure. As no real alteration has been done on your stomach, your stomach would soon return to its original form, as if nothing happened. However, keep in mind that the band is intended to stay in there forever.

For some, the cost of weight loss surgery seems prohibitive. But that is not true; weight loss surgery in many ways can be very important to your life. You just need to truly see it as that, and in fact, as an investment in yourself. Then you will see that it is not that expensive after all; this surgery has huge potential of changing your life completely.

You must remember one thing, and that is you are investing in yourself. If buying a car or a house is an investment, then this surgery is also. Those two things have monthly financing plans; it is fact that weight loss surgery also has such a plan. You only really need to make a down payment (the higher, the lower the monthly fees), and pay a monthly fee. If you happen to have a windfall, you can always make extra payments and reduce your monthly fees.

Shop around, as you should to find the best rates; some clinics may offer better monthly payments than others. Match it with the services that you want, some services you may want to cut out (such as extra seminars), and that may help reduce the cost. Ultimately though, remember that this is not a waste of money; you are investing in your self-esteem, your health, and your future. This investment will help you on your way to a new journey, and potentially a new life, a much higher quality of life.

The success behind healthy living is the willingness to make changes to your lifestyle choices. Whether you have to modify your dietary plans or reduce any bad habits, every action you take has a reaction to your overall health. Eat healthy. Live healthy. Be healthy.

How To Get A Beaming White Smile

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

A bright smile makes a big difference. As the daughter of a dental hygiene worker, I take care of my teeth everyday like a military routine. Whenever my friends and I travel, they always tease me how long it takes me to brush my teeth, floss, use mouthwash, brush my teeth again, and then apply teeth whiteners. You know how some girls take a long time to do their hair and make-up? Well, it’s the same for me with teeth.

When I was a little wee girl visiting the dentist, I was always frightened by those pictures of yellow, crooked, and decayed teeth. It scared me so much that the dentist actually had to replace them with kid-friendly posters on the walls (and lollipops – I always got a lollipop after every dentist visit). Anyway, I was motivated to take extremely good care of my oral hygiene. I’m proud to say that I’ve never experienced any cavities or toothaches before!

What is the secret behind my success? It’s a combination of common sense and also some devoted effort. Here are a few of my tips for achieving a white beaming smile:

1. Brush your teeth daily! Personally, I recommend brushing your teeth after every meal, but I know that may not be possible in some situations. (Imagine going out with friends and carrying a toothbrush in my purse!) At the very least, however, you should brush your teeth once after you wake up and once more before you go to sleep.

2. Use the right toothpaste! There are a lot of different toothpaste brands out there in the market. Choose the one that creates the best results for your teeth. I know I’ve experimented with many different brands until I reached upon one that satisfies my needs. Also, I know some people’s teeth are more sensitive than others, and there are appropriate toothpaste to remedy that effect.

3. Floss! I cannot stress the importance of flossing! Like any part of your body, the gums in your mouth needs a routine workout. Flossing is like exercise for your teeth and gums. Simply brushing your teeth is not sufficient dental hygiene. You’d be surprised how much better condition your teeth would be in if you floss everyday!

4. Use mouthwash! This not only kills any bacteria in your mouth, but you also get fresh minty breath that will make a big difference in how you approach people.

5. Visit the dentist often! It is very important that you get routine check-ups with the dentist, who will keep you up-to-date with the condition of your teeth. If you have a cavity or toothache, it’s best to take care of the problem soon before it worsens over time.

If you follow these five procedures on a routine basis, I guarantee that you’ll have a whiter smile which could light up an entire room. Remember to never slack off. It might seem like a long time to spend fifteen to thirty minutes cleaning your teeth everyday, but you will see the difference in the long run.

Achieving a healthy lifestyle requires you to make small but significant changes to your daily habits. Consult these helpful and detailed health tips in order to make the right choices for your lifestyle.

Weight Loss Surgery is an Option

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Without a doubt one of the biggest issues we have in society is obesity. It is one of the biggest epidemics in North America, and people’s quality of life is being severely reduced because of it. Everyone’s heard of Super Size Me, and the media keeps talking about how our society has now become fat. It is logical then to say that, if people were to lose weight, their quality of life would increase significantly.

There are many different types of diets, and whether they work or not really depend on the user. Of course, there are fad diets, diets that are quite dangerous. However, for some people dieting and exercising is almost next to impossible. The next option therefore is surgery. Generally there are four different types of surgery one can undergo. They all work essentially under the same principle: make you feel full faster while eating less by reducing capacity of food eaten.

First off we have the Vertical Banded Gastroplasty, aka “Stomach Stapling”. This procedure is known to be safer than the more drastic gastric bypass, which basically rewires your digestive system by bypassing your stomach. However, this procedure is not at all reversible, as it requires stapling and cutting of the stomach. There are many serious complications that can arise from this surgery. One real advantage of this surgery is though, it does not interfere with your body’s intake of nutrition, thus reducing the chance of malnutrition.

Up next we have what doctors call the Biliopancreatic Diversion surgery. As with the one before, this one be undone. A large part of your stomach is removed, while the remaining part is diverted straight to the final part of the small intestine. You can be sure that your stomach would be stapled, and cut up, along with your bowls. Because of this, this surgery has the highest mortality rate out of all the procedures. And you can look forward to a life time of mal-nutrition monitoring and supplements. But, this surgery does give you the fastest, most rapid weight lost out of all the surgeries.

Mentioned earlier, the third option we have is the gastric bypass. Stomach Stapling is as what it is; your stomach is stapled into a smaller pouch. This of course reduces the amount of food you can eat, and allows you to feel full with less food. It also forces your body to absorb less of the nutrition in the food. However, as with all these major surgical options, this procedure is next to impossible to reverse. And there’s also the dumping syndrome – food has the potential of going through your digestive system.

The last, and safest surgery is the Laproscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure, aka Lap-Band. It works under the same principle of reducing the amount of food you eat, by placing a limit on it. However, because it uses an adjustable band instead of stapling or removing portions of your digestive system, it is reversible. It is done via a laparoscope, meaning it is much less invasive than the other procedures – small incisions are used. As a result, recovery time for the procedure is quick, and complications are minimized. Weight lost results is comparable with the other procedures, and again, this is completely reversible.

Before choosing surgery as an option for weight loss, always make sure to do your research and consult with your doctor. This is not a simple matter. Not only could you potentially transform your life, but you need to ensure that what you’re doing is best suited for you. Healthy living doesn’t come easy!
